FISHER FDV-V1– 1998 - REAL OR FAKE?. One
digital camera history web site has reported that Fisher produced a
prototype digital camera, the
FVD-V1, a rebadged Sanyo VPC-Z380 shown above on the left.
Supposedly, a person by the name of Gary Dion purchased the camera at
auction for $180 and did a review of the camera. We are told that
the
camera was composed of the front of the Sanyo VPC-Z380 and the back of
a Sanyo VPC-G200. We have a number of observations: 1) The
photo shown is too small to read the lettering. 2) A google
search for Fisher FVD-V1 only turned up the previously noted
digital camera history web site. 3) A google search
for
Gary Dion and the FVD-V1 and his review turned up nothing. 4) If
Fisher did have a digital camera prototype based on the Sanyo VPC-Z380,
how would it have ended up at auction where Mr. Dion could have
purchased and reviewed it? 5) Such a single prototype by a
non-digital camera company such as Fisher would be quite valuable to
collectors, yet there is not a peep about it on the web other than the
one reporting camera history site which states that the camera did
exist. 6) Hoaxes concerning various
non-existing cameras are fairly common as they are easy to
generate using various photo manipulating programs.
7) It would be no problem to put together such a camera
using the bodies of the two cameras mentioned which
are readily available as parts cameras on eBay, and then place a
Fisher logo on it. 8) Such a camera, if proved to be
seemingly authentic as demonstrated by a web site and the words of the
web site operator, might cause a non-suspicious buyer to part with a
lot of cash as often happens with fake rare coins. Note the
photo on the right of a supposed Fisher FVD-1, also based
on the Sanyo VPC-Z380. Looks pretty authentic, but we
know it's not because we generated it ourselves! Until proven
otherwise, we will continue to assume that no such camera ever existed
- LET THE BUYER BEWARE!
