3COM BIGPICTURE TV PHONE - 1997.  A web cam with a difference!  Early models used  a standard ball-shaped camera and included a video card to be installed in your PC.  Using the camera and the included equipment, owners could talk to and see others who had the same device installed. Between 2-15 frames per second depending upon quality of image selected.  Original MSRP about $200.  The model 2484 shown above (second row) does not require an additional video card.  3Com Corporation was a digital electronics manufacturer founded in 1979 by Robert Metcalfe, Howard Charney, Bruce Borden, and Greg Shaw.  3Com was a contraction of "Computer Communication Compatibility."   In 2009 3Com was acquired by Hewlett-Packard.  We believe we are the first digital camera history web site to provide a photo and information concerning this camera.

3-D IMAGES LTD. -1997.  3-D Images Ltd., of London, England marketed a 3-D stereo camera manufactured by housing the key parts of two Kodak DC-20 digital cameras in one case.

TOSHIBA PDR-2, (Allegretto 2 in Japan) -1997.  1/4-inch 640 x 480 pixel CMOS sensor.  ISO 100.  Fixed-focus 49mm f/2.8 lens.  Shutter 1/8 to 1/1000 second.  For an additional $30 a version of the camera came with a unique Flashmate 2000 PC-card reader that connected directly to the parallel printer port of any standard PC.
