PENTACON
Praktica QD-500 (Jenoptik JD11, Minton S-Cam F1, Probe 99, Quark Probe 99, Argus Quark Probe 99, etc.) - 1998. 1/4-inch
640 x 480 pixel CCD. ISO 40. F/2.8 50mm fixed-focus
lens.
Shutter 1/2 to 1/1000 second.
What's in a name? Sometimes a
lot, sometimes not much. This camera was manufactured by Minton
Optic and sold by a variety of companies that normally put their own
name and logo on it, however, many vendors and collectors refer to it
merely as theProbe 99, Minton probe, or Minton Probe 99,
regardless of the actual name on the box or camera. Such
was the case with the camera shown on the far right. It was
sold on eBay as the Probe 99 Digital Pocket Camera, but the box shows
the camera as a Quark Probe 99. However, the camera in the box
had no manufacturer identifcation whatsoever, only a serial
number. Apparently, Minton never themselves sold it as a Probe,
or Probe 99, only as the Minton S-Cam F1, and then not until
1999. Regardless, it's pretty certain that they are all the same
inside. We believe we were the
first digital camera history web site to provide a photo and
information concerning this camera.

PHILIPS
ESP40 - 1998. The
above camera was shown during COMDEX '98 in Tokyo Japan, April
6-9. It clearly says ESP40 on the camera even though the plackard
says ESP50. It was a working camera and appears to be exactly the
same as the ESP50 shown in the U.S. in June of '98 at the PC Expo in
New
York (see below) except for the color and the letters ESP40. The
material in the PC Watch article also refers to it as an ESP50.
The article states that it had an optical viewfinder and stored images
on Smart Media flash card. It may be that the producltion model
which was silver and had only the words "Digital Camera" on the front
was not yet ready and Philips chose to display a prototype rather than
have no camera at all at the Japanese COMDEX. We believe we were
the first digital camera history web site to provide a photo and
information concerning this camera.
